How to Create an Email Marketing Campaign That Works

Email marketing is one of those things I believe every online business owner should take seriously. You can spend hours writing blog posts, creating social media content and attracting visitors to your website. But what happens when those visitors leave? Unless they return on their own, you might never hear from them again.

This is one reason I believe building an email list is so important. It gives you a way to stay in touch with people who have already shown an interest in what you do. You can share useful information, recommend relevant products, promote new blog posts and let subscribers know about offers that might interest them.

I’ve been working online for around 12 years, I believe an email list can become one of the most valuable assets in an online business.

From my own experience, I’ve learned that building relationships with subscribers and keeping in touch consistently can be incredibly valuable. Email marketing isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme, but it can become an important part of building a long-term online business.

In this guide, I’ll explain how to create an email marketing campaign, build an email list and use email to support your website and affiliate marketing activities.

Why email marketing matters for an online business

When I started working online, I learned that getting attention is only one part of the process. You also need a way to build relationships with people who visit your website or discover your content.

Social media can help you reach new audiences, but you do not control those platforms. Accounts can be restricted, reach can fall and the rules can change. I have seen how frustrating it can be when you spend time building a presence on a platform that you do not own.

An email list gives you another way to communicate with your audience. You still rely on an email marketing provider to deliver your messages, and subscribers can unsubscribe at any time, but you are not relying entirely on social media algorithms to reach people.

For bloggers, affiliate marketers and digital entrepreneurs, this can be particularly useful. Someone might discover your website through Google, read an article and leave. If they have a reason to subscribe to your email list, you have the opportunity to provide more value over time.

That is the real benefit of email marketing. You are building a relationship rather than simply chasing another website visitor.

How to build an email list from your website

Before you start creating an email marketing campaign, you need people who have chosen to receive your emails. The best way to start is by giving visitors a clear reason to subscribe.

Think about the audience you want to attract and the problems they are trying to solve. If your website is about blogging and online business, readers might want help with keyword research, website traffic, affiliate marketing or setting up their first blog.

You could create a simple checklist, a beginner’s guide, a short email course or a downloadable resource that helps with one of these topics.

For example, I have created a free guide about why I believe a blog is one of the best foundations for an online business. A resource like this can give readers something useful while introducing them to the information I share on my website.

You do not need to create a huge digital product to get started. A practical resource that solves one specific problem can be enough to encourage someone to subscribe.

Place your email signup form where visitors can find it easily. You might include it within relevant blog posts, on your homepage or on a dedicated landing page. Explain what subscribers will receive and avoid making promises you cannot support.

Most importantly, make sure people actively agree to receive your emails. Never build your list by buying random email addresses or adding people without their permission.

Choosing an email marketing platform

An email marketing platform helps you collect subscribers, organise your list, create campaigns and send emails. Depending on the provider, you can also create signup forms, automate follow-up emails and track your campaign results.

From my own experience, email marketing has been an important part of being online for more than 12 years. During that time, I have created and sent over 100,000 emails. I’ve learned that building an email list gives you a direct way to stay in touch with people who are interested in what you do. Rather than relying entirely on social media, you can share useful information, promote new blog posts and recommend relevant products directly to your subscribers.

Personally, I recommend LeadsLeap. I find it very affordable, and it offers useful tools for capturing leads and building your email list without spending a fortune. It’s worth considering if you’re starting an online business and want a cost-effective way to get started.

There are several email marketing platforms available, and the right choice depends on your needs and budget. Some offer free plans with limits on contacts or monthly emails, while others charge according to the size of your list and the features you use.

Before choosing a provider, look at how easy it is to create campaigns, manage subscribers, automate emails and measure results. In my experience, the real value comes from building your list consistently and keeping in touch with subscribers. Over time, your email list can become a valuable business asset and help generate sales through relevant offers and affiliate marketing.

Take A Closer Look

How to create an effective email marketing campaign

A good email marketing campaign starts with a clear purpose. Before writing anything, ask yourself what you want the email to achieve.

Perhaps you want to send readers to a new blog post, share a helpful tip, introduce a product or tell subscribers about a special offer. Having one main objective makes it easier to write a focused message.

Your subject line is important because it helps readers decide whether to open the email. Keep it relevant to the message and make it sound natural. Avoid misleading headlines or exaggerated promises just to attract attention.

Once someone opens your email, get to the point. Write as though you are talking to one person rather than delivering a sales presentation to a crowd. Share something useful, explain why it matters and give the reader a clear next step.

That next step might be reading a blog post, watching a tutorial, downloading a resource or looking at a product you genuinely believe could help.

You do not need to turn every email into a sales pitch. In fact, I believe it is important to build trust by sharing useful information as well as occasional promotions.

People are more likely to remain interested when your emails offer something worthwhile. If every message is asking them to buy something, they may quickly lose interest or unsubscribe.

Using email marketing for affiliate marketing

Email marketing can work well alongside affiliate marketing because it gives you another way to introduce readers to products and services relevant to their interests.

For example, if someone subscribes because they want to learn about blogging, you could send them practical advice about choosing a domain name, setting up WordPress, researching keywords and attracting website traffic.

Later, when it makes sense, you might recommend a hosting service, keyword research tool or other product that could help them put those ideas into practice.

The important thing is relevance. A subscriber interested in blogging probably will not appreciate receiving unrelated promotions every day. Try to understand what your audience wants and make recommendations that fit.

Be transparent when you use affiliate links. If you may earn a commission when someone makes a purchase, disclose that clearly. You should also check the rules of your affiliate programmes and email provider before including promotional links.

There are no guarantees that an email will generate clicks, sales or commissions. Results depend on many factors, including the quality of your list, the relevance of your offer, your email content and the trust you build with subscribers.

How often should you send marketing emails?

There is no single schedule that works for every business. Some people send a weekly newsletter, while others use a combination of regular updates and automated email sequences.

What matters most is consistency and relevance. Choose a schedule you can maintain and make it clear to subscribers what they can expect.

For example, you might send one useful email each week, sharing a new article, a practical tip or a lesson you have learned from working online.

You can also create a welcome sequence for new subscribers. This could introduce your website, deliver the resource they requested and point them towards a few of your most useful articles.

Avoid overwhelming people with messages simply because you can. Pay attention to engagement, unsubscribes and feedback, then adjust your approach where necessary.

Measure your email marketing results

One advantage of using an email marketing platform is that you can review how your campaigns perform.

You can look at delivery rates, clicks, unsubscribes and conversions where tracking is available. These figures can help you understand which topics attract interest and which links people choose to visit.

Open rates can be useful as a rough indicator, but privacy features and email software can make them unreliable. I would not judge an entire campaign by open rates alone.

Instead, look at whether your emails are reaching the right people and encouraging meaningful actions. Are subscribers clicking through to your blog? Are they reading the resources you share? Are relevant offers generating interest?

Use what you learn to improve future campaigns. You do not need to get everything right immediately. Email marketing is something you can develop over time by testing different subject lines, topics and approaches.

Why I believe an email list can become like an ATM

After more than 12 years online and creating over 100,000 emails, I believe an email list can become one of the most valuable assets in an online business. I’ve shared more about my online business journey here.

I sometimes describe a well-built email list as eventually becoming like an ATM. Once you have an audience that knows you, trusts you and is interested in what you share, you have a direct way to communicate with them, promote new content and recommend relevant products.

Of course, an email list is not a money-making machine. People will not open every email or buy everything you recommend. You still need to provide value, build trust and understand what your subscribers actually want.

From my experience, the real benefit comes from building those relationships over time. If you consistently share useful information and recommend products that genuinely suit your audience, your email list can create opportunities to generate sales long after someone first visits your website.

For me, that is the bigger lesson. Online business is not just about attracting visitors today. It is about building an audience you can continue to reach, rather than relying entirely on a single blog post or social media update.

Final thoughts

If you are building an online business, I would seriously consider adding email marketing to your plans. It can work alongside your blog, SEO strategy and affiliate marketing activities, giving interested readers another way to keep in touch with you.

Start with a simple email signup form, offer a useful reason to subscribe and send messages that genuinely help your audience. You can build your campaigns gradually as you learn what your readers respond to.

After 12 years online, my view is that you should not rely on just one source of traffic or one platform to reach people. Build your website, create useful content and develop an email list alongside it.

It takes time, but the relationships you build can become an important part of your business for years to come.

My advice is simple: start building your email list today, even if you only have a handful of subscribers.

After more than 12 years online and creating over 100,000 emails, I know how valuable email marketing can be. A well-managed email list gives you a direct way to communicate with your audience, build trust and generate sales over time. I believe it can become one of the most valuable assets in your online business.

Your next step: Choose an email marketing platform, add a signup form to your website and give visitors a reason to subscribe, such as a free guide or useful tips. I recommend looking at LeadsLeap for affordable lead-capture tools.
