Decide what your blog will be about?
Starting a blog can seem like a big project when you are looking at everything that needs to be done. You need to choose a topic, find a domain name, set up your website, create content and eventually find ways to attract visitors.
The good news is that building a successful blog from scratch does not have to be complicated.
I know this because I have been building businesses and working online for more than 12 years. I have experimented with affiliate marketing, different traffic sources, content creation, SEO and a range of online business models during that time.
I have also learned that there is a big difference between reading about making money online and actually building something yourself.
There have been things that worked for me and plenty of things that did not. I have tried different platforms, promoted different products, built websites, created content and learned through experience what it takes to keep an online project moving forward.
That experience has changed the way I approach blogging today.
I am less interested in chasing every new opportunity and more interested in building useful content, creating a website that people can trust and developing traffic that can grow over time.
That is the approach I would recommend to anyone starting a blog today.
Decide what your blog will be about
The first step when you want to build a successful blog from scratch is deciding what you are going to write about.
Your blog does not have to cover every subject imaginable. In fact, having a clear direction can make it much easier to create useful content and attract the right audience.
Think about subjects you know something about, enjoy learning about or have genuine experience with.
For me, online business, blogging, digital marketing, SEO and affiliate marketing are natural subjects because I have spent years working in these areas.
That personal experience is valuable because you are not simply repeating something you found on another website. You can explain what you have actually learned.
You might want to create a blog about cooking, travel, personal finance, technology, fitness, hobbies, online business or digital marketing.
The important thing is that you have enough interest in the subject to keep creating content.
A blog can take time to grow, so choosing a subject simply because you think it will make money may make it difficult to stay motivated.
A good starting point is to find the connection between what you know, what you enjoy and what people are searching for online.
Choose a domain name and hosting
Once you know what your blog will be about, the next step is choosing a domain name and reliable hosting. I personally recommend SiteGround because I have found it affordable, user friendly and packed with useful built in tools that can make getting started much easier for beginners.
Your domain name is the address people will use to find your website, so try to choose something that is easy to remember, easy to spell and relevant to the general direction of your blog.
You will also need reliable web hosting to keep your website online.
I have built websites using different platforms and hosting arrangements over the years, and one thing I have learned is that beginners should not make the technical side of blogging more complicated than it needs to be.
WordPress is one of the most widely used platforms for building websites and blogs, and choosing a hosting provider that makes WordPress easy to install and manage can save you a lot of unnecessary hassle.
For someone starting a new blog, SiteGround is an option worth considering because it is beginner friendly, offers WordPress hosting and provides a range of built in tools to help manage your website.
You also do not need to start with the most expensive hosting package available. Begin with what you actually need, and as your blog grows and attracts more visitors, you can look at upgrading your hosting when necessary.
Build a simple website
Once WordPress is installed, you can start building the basic structure of your blog.
This is another area where I think beginners can easily get distracted.
It is tempting to spend days changing themes, colours, menus, plugins and other design elements.
I have learned that the website does not have to be perfect before you start creating content.
Your website needs to be easy to navigate, readable on mobile devices and straightforward for visitors to understand.
Create the essential pages first. These normally include your home page, contact page, privacy policy and disclaimer.
You can then create categories that make sense for your content.
Think about what you want someone to see when they arrive at your website for the first time.
Can they immediately understand what your blog is about? Can they easily find your latest articles?
Can they move from one article to another?
A clean and simple website can often be more useful than a complicated design filled with unnecessary features.
Create useful content
Content is at the centre of almost every successful blog.
You can have a great domain name and an attractive website, but if there is nothing useful for visitors to read, it will be difficult to build an audience.
Over the years, I have created a lot of online content, and one thing I have learned is that publishing content simply for the sake of publishing is not a strategy.
There needs to be a reason for the article to exist.
Start by creating articles that answer questions your target audience is actually asking.
For example, if you are building a blog about online business, you could write about starting a blog, getting website traffic, affiliate marketing, SEO, email marketing and different ways bloggers can build an online income.
Try to solve a problem with each article.
Instead of writing an article simply because you found a keyword with a high search volume, think about what the person searching that phrase actually wants to know.
That approach has become increasingly important in my own blogging.
I want someone who lands on one of my articles to get something useful from it, even if they never buy anything or click an affiliate link.
That is how you start building trust.
Use SEO as part of your strategy
Search engine optimisation, usually called SEO, can help your blog become easier for search engines to understand and potentially bring visitors from search results.
SEO does not need to be complicated when you are starting out.
Begin with the basics.
Choose a clear main topic for each article. Use your main keyword naturally in the title and throughout the content where it makes sense. Use clear headings and make sure the article answers the question behind the search.
Do not repeat the same keyword over and over again.
I have seen plenty of people become obsessed with keywords, search volume and ranking positions. Those things matter, but they should not take over the entire process of creating content.
Search engines have become much better at understanding topics and context, so writing naturally is important.
My approach today is to understand what people are searching for, create genuinely useful content and then make sure the article is properly structured for search engines.
It is a much more sustainable approach than trying to manipulate every possible ranking signal.
Build internal links and earn quality backlinks
As your blog grows, your articles should not exist as completely separate pieces of content.
Internal linking allows you to connect related articles together, making it easier for readers to discover more useful information on your website.
This is something I have been putting more focus on as MattFeastOnline has grown.
For example, if I write an article about building a successful blog, it makes sense to link to my article about getting your first 100 blog visitors.
I can also link to content about backlinks for bloggers, how bloggers make money, building a WordPress website and other related subjects.
These links give readers somewhere useful to go next and help create a more connected website.
At the same time, it is worth understanding the value of backlinks. A backlink is a link from another website to your content, and relevant, quality backlinks can help your content get discovered while contributing to your website’s overall authority.
I have found that backlinks are not something to chase simply for the sake of increasing numbers. A relevant link from a website that is connected to your subject can be far more useful than a large number of unrelated or low quality links.
The key word here is natural.
I do not want to add internal links simply because I think I need a certain number in every article, and I do not want to build backlinks just to make a number look good.
If another article genuinely expands on something I have mentioned, that is a good reason to link to it. The same applies to backlinks. Focus on creating useful content that other websites may genuinely want to reference and share.
Start building blog traffic
Publishing an article does not automatically mean people will find it.
Getting blog traffic is one of the biggest challenges for new bloggers. I have experienced this myself.
![]()
You can spend hours researching a topic, writing an article and publishing it, only to discover that hardly anyone visits it initially.
That can be frustrating. But it is also part of building a website.
Search engines need time to discover, crawl and understand new content. Your website also needs to build up a collection of useful pages.
I have seen articles that initially received very little attention begin attracting visitors later.
That is one reason I do not believe every article should be judged immediately.
You can also share your articles through social media for example Facebook and many more, participate in relevant online communities where appropriate and build relationships with other website owners.
Another important area is backlinks.
A backlink is a link from another website to your website. Quality backlinks can help people discover your content and can also contribute to your website’s authority in search.
However, building backlinks should not become a numbers game.
A handful of relevant links from useful websites can be more valuable than trying to create hundreds of low-quality links.
I have written more about this in my article on backlinks for bloggers, which explains some of the ways bloggers can approach link building.
Give your blog time to grow
One of the biggest mistakes new bloggers can make is expecting immediate results.
My own experience online has taught me that there are very few genuine shortcuts.
You may publish an article and see very little traffic at first.
That does not necessarily mean the article has failed.
A new blog needs time to build content, authority and visibility.
Some articles may start receiving visitors relatively quickly, while others can take considerably longer.
Keep improving your existing content as well as publishing new articles.
Look at which pages are receiving impressions and clicks. Look at the questions people are asking and consider whether your articles can answer them better.
Blogging is often about making small improvements consistently.
Think about how your blog can make money
Once you start building an audience, there are different ways a blog can potentially generate income.
Affiliate marketing is one option I have personally used for many years.
The basic idea is straightforward. You recommend products or services that are relevant to your audience and may receive a commission when someone makes a qualifying purchase through your affiliate link.
I have worked with different affiliate networks and promoted different types of online products over the years.
That experience has taught me that not every product is worth promoting simply because it offers a commission.
Your reputation is worth more than one sale.
If I recommend something on my website, I want it to make sense for the person reading the article.
You can also consider advertising, sponsored content, digital products, online courses, services or other business opportunities that fit your audience.
However, I would not make monetisation the only purpose of your blog.
If every article is written simply to sell something, visitors may quickly lose trust.
Create useful content first and introduce relevant recommendations where they genuinely make sense.
I have also covered how bloggers make money, including some of the different options available.
Use AI carefully
Artificial intelligence has changed the way many bloggers approach content creation.
I use AI myself, but I see it as a tool rather than a replacement for experience.
AI can be useful for brainstorming ideas, researching topics, creating outlines, improving wording and finding different ways to explain something.
However, I do not think a successful blog should simply become a publishing machine producing hundreds of generic AI articles.
After more than a decade of working online, I believe personal experience is becoming even more valuable.
Anyone can ask an AI tool to write a generic article about affiliate marketing.
It is much harder to reproduce someone’s genuine experience of building websites, testing different traffic methods, promoting products and learning from mistakes.
That is where bloggers can add something different.
Use AI to help with the work, but add your own examples, experiences, observations and opinions.
Check facts before publishing and make sure the finished article actually provides something useful to the reader.
Keep learning and improving
You do not need to become an SEO expert, web developer and marketing professional before you start a blog.
I certainly did not know everything when I started working online. I learned by doing.
Some things worked. Some things failed. Some ideas looked promising but did not deliver what I expected.
That is part of the process. Learn one thing at a time.
You might begin by learning how WordPress works. Then you can learn the basics of SEO, internal linking, keyword research, email marketing and affiliate marketing.
As your blog grows, you will naturally discover areas where you need to improve.
You can also update older articles when you have better information or new experience to add.
That is one of the advantages of owning a blog. Your website can continue developing long after your first article has been published.
Frequently asked questions
How do I start a successful blog from scratch?
Start by choosing a clear subject that you know or genuinely want to learn about. Choose a suitable domain name, set up WordPress hosting, create a simple website and begin publishing useful content. Learn basic SEO and keep improving your website as it grows.
How long does it take to build a successful blog?
There is no fixed timeframe. Some websites can begin attracting search traffic relatively quickly, while others take much longer. Building a successful blog is usually a gradual process involving consistent content creation, SEO, internal linking and audience building.
How do I get traffic to a new blog?
Start by creating useful content around topics your audience is searching for. Optimise your articles for search, connect related posts with internal links and look for genuine opportunities to promote your content. Quality backlinks can also help your website become more discoverable.
Can you make money from a blog?
Yes, there are several potential ways to monetise a blog. These can include affiliate marketing, advertising, sponsored content, digital products, courses and services. The best approach depends on your subject, audience and the type of content you create.
Can AI help me build a blog?
AI can help with many parts of blogging, including research, brainstorming, outlines, editing and content planning. However, I believe bloggers should add their own experience, examples and perspective rather than relying on AI to produce generic content without personal input.
What should you do next?
If you are serious about starting a blog, do not spend another few weeks trying to find the perfect strategy before taking action.
Start with one simple step today.
Choose the subject you want your blog to focus on, write down 10 questions your ideal reader would search for and turn those questions into your first 10 article ideas.
Then choose your domain, set up your website and publish your first useful article.
If you already have a blog, the next step is different. Look through your existing content and find one article that could be improved. Add more useful information, strengthen the introduction, add relevant internal links and make sure it actually answers the question the reader came to your website to solve.
You do not need to rebuild everything at once.
Pick one article, improve it today and then move on to the next one.
That is exactly how a small blog can gradually become a much bigger online asset.
Final thoughts
Building a successful blog from scratch takes time, but the process does not need to be overwhelming.
I have been working online for more than 12 years, and if there is one thing I would tell someone starting today, it is to stop looking for the perfect shortcut.
Build something useful.
Choose a subject you can genuinely talk about. Create a simple website. Publish helpful content. Learn the basics of SEO. Connect your articles with sensible internal links and look for genuine opportunities to build quality backlinks.
Most importantly, give the process time.
I have tried different online business models over the years, and my approach has changed as I have gained more experience. Today, I would rather build a website gradually and create something useful than chase every new opportunity that appears.
Your first article will probably not be your best article. Your first website probably will not be your best website either.
That is completely normal.
The important thing is to start, learn from the process and keep building.
A successful blog is rarely created overnight. It is built one article, one visitor and one lesson at a time.
And that is still the approach I am taking with MattFeastOnline.
