Why Having Your Own Blog Still Matters
If you’re building an online business, I personally believe having your own blog is still very important. I know there are so many different platforms available today, and you can build an audience on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms, but I still believe you need your own base online. I’ve been involved in online marketing for many years, and this is something I’ve learned through my own experience rather than simply reading about it somewhere.
The reason I believe having your own blog is so important is quite simple. You need somewhere that belongs to you. Social media platforms are fantastic for getting your content and your business in front of people, but you don’t actually own those platforms. They can change their rules, change their algorithms, restrict accounts or even remove an account. Imagine spending years building an audience on one platform and then suddenly losing access to it. That could be devastating if your whole business depended on it.
Your own blog gives you a place to build your business around. It becomes your online home where people can find out who you are, what you do, what you have learned and what you recommend. That’s how I look at my own website. It’s not just another website with a few links on it. It’s part of my overall online business and personal brand.
Build an Online Business from Home
Build Your Own Online Brand
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from working online is that you should build yourself rather than build everything around somebody else’s business.
When you’re an affiliate marketer, you’re often promoting other people’s products, companies or opportunities. That’s how affiliate marketing works. You send people to an offer and, if they take action, you can earn a commission. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you have to remember that the company you’re promoting isn’t yours.
Businesses can change. Companies can close down. Offers can disappear. Affiliate programmes can change their terms. I’ve seen plenty of changes during my years online.
That’s why I prefer to build my own brand alongside whatever I’m promoting.

For me, that’s MattFeastOnline. The products and services I talk about today might not be the same ones I’m talking about several years from now, but my name, my website and my experience remain. I’m building something around myself rather than putting everything into someone else’s business.
I think that’s a very important difference when you’re trying to create something for the long term.
Your Blog Can Become the Centre of Your Business
I don’t see my blog as something separate from the rest of my online marketing. I see it as the centre of everything I do.
For example, you might discover one of my videos on YouTube. Someone else might see one of my posts on Facebook. Another person might find one of my articles through Google or Bing. Someone else might receive an email from me.
All of those people can eventually be directed back to my website.
That’s what I mean when I talk about having a base.
Instead of constantly sending people straight to somebody else’s sales page, you can bring them to your own website first. They can read an article, watch a video, learn something useful and then decide what they want to do next.
They might be interested in one particular product, but they might also discover something else on your website that is more relevant to them. That’s another reason I like having a blog. You’re not relying on one offer or one opportunity.
You have a whole collection of content and information that people can explore.
Blogging Can Help You Get Organic Traffic
Another reason I believe having a blog is important is SEO and organic traffic.
Traffic is the lifeblood of an online business. You can have the best product in the world, but if nobody sees it, you’re not going to make many sales.
I’ve spent many years learning about online traffic, and I’ve used different methods over that time. Social media is one way of getting traffic. YouTube is another. Email marketing is another. Paid advertising can also be useful.
But organic traffic from search engines is something I really like because people are actually searching for information.
If you create useful content around questions and subjects that people are looking for, your articles have the opportunity to appear in search results. That doesn’t mean every article will rank, and I’m certainly not going to tell you that you can publish a blog post today and have thousands of visitors tomorrow.
It doesn’t work like that. SEO takes time, and you have to be patient.
I’ve learned that you need to keep creating useful content, keep improving your website and keep learning. Search engines change, SEO changes and what worked several years ago might not work in exactly the same way today.

You Don’t Have to Be a Perfect Writer
I think another reason people don’t start blogs is because they believe they have to be a fantastic writer.
I don’t agree with that.
You don’t need to write like you’re producing a newspaper article or a university paper. You need to communicate with people and give them something useful.
Personally, I prefer content that sounds like a real person is talking rather than something that sounds completely polished and corporate.
That’s one of the reasons I like sharing my own experiences. I’ve made mistakes over the years, I’ve tried different things and I’ve learned from them. I don’t pretend to know everything.
I’m still learning today.
That’s the reality of working online. Things change all the time, and you have to keep learning if you want to stay involved.
Use Your Blog Alongside YouTube
I also think blogging and YouTube work extremely well together.
I’ve been creating videos for many years, and I remember when I was nervous about appearing on camera. When you’re starting out, it can feel strange talking to a camera when nobody is sitting there listening to you.
But you get used to it. The same applies to blogging.
You don’t have to choose between creating videos and writing articles. You can use both.
If you create a YouTube video about a particular subject, you can turn that subject into a blog post. You can explain the topic in more detail, include the video in the article and give people somewhere else to find your content.
This also means you’re not relying on one platform to get your message out there.
One piece of content can give you several opportunities to reach people.
Don’t Forget About Email Marketing
Your blog can also work alongside email marketing.
If someone finds your website and likes your content, you can give them a reason to stay connected with you. You can build an email list and let people know when you’ve published a new article, created a new video or have something useful to share.
Again, it’s about building your own audience.
I don’t want to depend entirely on Facebook or YouTube to reach people. Those platforms are useful, and I will continue using them, but I want people to have another way of connecting with me.
That’s where your website and email list become valuable.
Build Relationships Instead of Spamming People
Something else I’ve learned during my years online is that people don’t like being constantly spammed.
I’ve seen people send a friend request on Facebook and then, almost immediately, send a sales pitch or an affiliate link.
Personally, I don’t think that’s the best way to build a business. People deal with people.
You need to build relationships and trust.
When I connect with somebody, I’d rather have a conversation, find out what they’re interested in and get to know them. I’m not interested in immediately throwing a business opportunity in their face.
If people regularly see your posts, watch your videos and read your articles, they start to recognise you.
Eventually they might say, “I’ve seen Matt talking about this before” or “I’ve read some of his articles.”
That’s how you build familiarity.
And when you eventually recommend something, people have some idea of who you are and where you’re coming from.
You Have to Get Outside Your Comfort Zone
When I first started doing videos and putting myself out there, I was nervous. I think most people are.
You worry about what people will think. You worry about making mistakes. You watch the video back and think you don’t look or sound right.
But you have to get over that. Nobody starts perfect.
I still make mistakes. Sometimes I say the wrong thing, sometimes I have to redo something and sometimes I just leave the mistakes in. That’s life.
I think people actually want to see the person behind the business. They don’t necessarily want everything to look perfect.
When you’re building a personal brand, being yourself can be one of your biggest advantages.
Blogging Is a Long-Term Process
If you’re thinking about starting a blog, my biggest piece of advice is to be patient.
Don’t expect overnight success.
I’ve been doing this for many years, from online marketing and affiliate marketing through to blogging, traffic generation and creating videos. I’ve learned that building something worthwhile takes time.
You might publish an article today and get hardly any visitors.
That doesn’t mean you’ve wasted your time.
You might publish another article a few weeks later, and eventually that one could start getting traffic from Google or Bing.
Over time, all those articles can build into a much larger website.
That’s why I see blogging as a long-term game.
You are building an asset rather than constantly starting again from zero.
Your Blog Is Something You Can Build on
When I look at my own online journey, having my own website gives me somewhere to keep building.
The social media platforms may change. The companies I promote may change. The products I recommend may change. Even the way people search for information will continue to change.
But I still have my website.
I can continue adding articles, videos, experiences, recommendations and useful information.
That’s what I mean when I say you need your own base.
You don’t have to abandon social media. Quite the opposite. Use it.
Use Facebook to get your content in front of people. Use YouTube to create videos. Use email marketing to stay connected. Learn SEO so people can discover your content through search engines.
But bring all of those traffic sources back to something you control.
Final Thoughts on Why I Believe You Need a Blog
After many years of working online, I still believe having your own blog is one of the best foundations you can build for an online business.
It gives you somewhere to build your personal brand, somewhere to publish your content and somewhere to send the traffic you’re generating from different platforms.
More importantly, you’re building something of your own.
I’m not saying blogging is a quick way to make money. It isn’t. It takes time, consistency, learning and patience.
But if you’re prepared to stick with it, your blog can become much more than just a collection of articles. It can become the foundation of your online business.
That’s exactly how I see MattFeastOnline.
I’ve gone from being nervous about making videos and putting myself out there to spending many years learning about online marketing, affiliate marketing, blogging, SEO and traffic.
I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I’ve also learned a lot.
So if you’re thinking about building an online business, my advice is simple: build your own platform, build your own brand and use the other platforms to help people find you.
You don’t need to have everything worked out before you begin.
Start with what you know, keep learning, keep creating and keep building.
Because in my experience, the people who stay consistent and are prepared to be patient are the ones who give themselves the best chance of building something that lasts.
