Wise Card Explained, How It Works for Travel, Spending and International Money

,

What Is Wise Card and How Does It Work?

If you travel regularly, work online, receive money from overseas, or simply want an easier way to manage different currencies, you may have come across the Wise Card.

But what exactly is Wise Card, how does it work, and is it worth using?

Try Wise Today?

If you travel, work online, or regularly deal with different currencies, Wise could make managing your money a lot easier.

I’ve personally used Wise across the USA, UK, Spain and Thailand, and it has become a very useful part of how I manage my money when travelling.

If you want to find out more, check out Wise for yourself and see what features are available in your country.

I have used Wise for international spending and money management while travelling between the USA, UK, Spain and Thailand. For me, it has worked like a charm. I have even used Wise almost like a bank account to manage my money and make payments in different currencies.

In this article, I’ll explain what Wise Card is, how Wise Card works, the benefits, fees, international spending options, ATM withdrawals, and my own experience using Wise around the world.

What Is Wise Card?

The Wise Card is a multi-currency debit card that connects to your Wise account. It lets you spend money online, in shops and while travelling using the money in your Wise account.

One of the biggest advantages of Wise is its focus on international spending. You can use the card in most places that accept debit cards, and Wise supports spending in more than 40 currencies.

Instead of opening a traditional bank account every time you visit another country, you can use Wise to hold and manage different currencies, depending on the features available in your country.

That flexibility is one of the main reasons I find Wise so useful.

How Does Wise Card Work?

The basic idea is actually very simple.

First, you open a Wise account and add money. You can then hold supported currencies, convert your money and use your Wise Card to make purchases.

For example, let’s say you have money in your Wise account and travel from the UK to Spain. Instead of relying entirely on your traditional bank card, you can use Wise to manage your money and pay with your Wise Card.

Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate when you convert currencies, although the company charges a conversion fee depending on the currencies involved.

The Wise app also shows your conversions and applicable fees, which makes it easier to keep track of what you’re spending.

My Experience Using Wise Card

This is where Wise really stands out for me.

I have travelled to the USA, UK, Spain and Thailand, and I’ve used Wise in different situations while travelling.

For me, it has worked like a charm.

I particularly like the fact that I don’t have to rely completely on my traditional bank when I’m abroad. I can keep money in my Wise account and use the Wise Card for everyday spending.

I’ve also used Wise almost like my bank for managing money.

I’m not saying everyone should replace their traditional bank account with Wise. Wise has its own features, limitations and eligibility requirements. However, because I travel and deal with different currencies, Wise has become a very useful part of my financial setup.

When I travel, I find it especially convenient.

Using Wise Card Abroad

Many people search for Wise Card for travel because they want a simpler way to spend money overseas.

When you use a traditional bank card abroad, your bank may charge foreign transaction fees, apply its own exchange-rate markup or add other charges.

Wise focuses specifically on international money transfers and spending.

You can use your Wise Card wherever the relevant Visa or Mastercard network accepts it, depending on the card you receive. Wise says its cards work in most places that accept debit cards.

I’ve personally found this extremely useful when travelling.

Whether I’m buying something in a shop, paying for something online or managing money while abroad, Wise gives me another option.

Wise Card Fees

One question people often ask is, “How much does Wise Card cost?”

The answer depends on where you live.

Wise uses different pricing structures in different countries. Card costs, ATM allowances and other charges can vary depending on where you registered your account.

For example, Wise’s US pricing currently lists a one-time $9 fee for a physical card, while digital cards don’t have an ordering fee. Wise also provides an ATM withdrawal allowance before additional Wise charges apply.

Always check Wise’s current pricing for your country before ordering a card.

You may also pay fees when you convert currencies, receive certain payments or withdraw money from an ATM.

The good thing is that Wise normally shows the applicable fees before you complete a transaction.

Wise Card and ATM Withdrawals

Another useful feature lets you withdraw cash from ATMs.

Wise sets your free withdrawal allowance according to where it issued your card.

However, the ATM owner may also charge its own fee. That fee comes separately from any charge Wise applies.

So, when you travel, don’t assume every ATM withdrawal will cost nothing.

I always recommend checking the Wise app and the ATM screen before confirming a withdrawal.

Wise Digital Card

You don’t always need to carry the physical card.

Wise also offers digital cards in supported countries. You can use them for online shopping and, where supported, connect them to services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

I particularly like this option because I don’t always want to use my main physical card for online purchases.

Is Wise Card Safe?

Another popular search question is “Is Wise Card safe?”

Wise gives you several security controls through its app. For example, you can freeze and unfreeze your card and receive notifications about transactions.

Personally, I like managing the card from my phone.

If something doesn’t look right, I can quickly check the transaction and control my card through the app.

Of course, you still need to protect your account. Use strong security, keep your login details private and never give your card or account credentials to someone you don’t trust.

Ready to Try Wise?

If you travel, work online, or regularly deal with different currencies, Wise could make managing your money a lot easier.

I’ve personally used Wise across the USA, UK, Spain and Thailand, and it has become a very useful part of how I manage my money when travelling.

If you want to find out more, check out Wise for yourself and see what features are available in your country.
